Botox - Not Just For Wrinkles

When we hear the word Botox, we often imagine needles, injections, beauty, and cosmetic enhancement. Indeed, this is a fair enough thought to have. For a number of years now, Botox has been used by celebrities, sports people, and even stay-at-home moms - to secure their youthfulness.

You are probably wondering why on earth we are talking about Botox on a website which is studying the issue of excessive sweating. Well, we are about to tell you. In recent medical tests, it has been found that Botox applied to the areas where excessive sweating is present, reduces the functionality of the sweat glands temporarily. Just as wrinkles can be removed with Botox, it seems that sweat can be too.

Unfortunately, for the average person, Botox is an impractical solution. As most people will know, Botox is traditionally an expensive treatment option. For one injection of Botox, you could expect to pay up to $300. The bad news here is that for excessive sweating, the price certainly doesn't go down. In fact, because areas where overactive sweat glands exist can be particularly large, the amount of Botox which needs to be used is a lot more than your ordinary or standard wrinkle removal treatment.

But putting cost aside for a moment, it is worth finding out exactly how Botox works to stem the production of sweat. To do this, we need to take a trip underneath the outer layer of the skin.

Under The Skin

Ultimately, the sweat glands are controlled by the brain. When the body temperature gets too high, the brain tells the sweat glands to produce and pump out extra moisture to the surface of the skin. The way that the brain is able to do this, is by communicating with the on-site nerves at the location of the sweat glands.

Therefore, if you are able to turn these nerves off, the brain is unable to communicate and start up the sweating process. You can probably see the issue with this. If the person has sweating problems in more than one area, the amount of Botox which needs to be used is huge. Therefore, as far as cost effectiveness goes, Botox is certainly not the best treatment option. There are many other options out there which treat excessive sweating in any part of the body - for a fraction of the price.
